Groundbreaking

The Western Reserve Masonic Community is located on Nettleton Road right here in Medina Township. On Sunday, April 15, 2012 Residents of the Western Reserve Masonic Community, along with Masons from chapters all over the state, gathered to celebrate the ground breaking of a new unit that will house Alzheimer's patients, who are in need of a secure unit.

Speakers at the dedication were State Rep. Dave Hall and Grand Master of Ohio Kevin B. Todd. Kicking off the event was the presentation of the colors by the members of the Grand Commandry Knights Templar, who were wearing their full uniforms and three-cornered feathered hats.

The new dementia unit, which will be known as the Memory Care Center, will have 24 beds and be totally self-contained. The unit will be built in a rear field on the Masonic Home's property and be connected to the main building by a walkway.

In anticipation of the ground breaking, the Ohio Masonic Home had started a capital campaign, with an anonymous donor willing to match every dollar raised. The Medina facility is estimated to cost around $3.5 million.

In December, it was announced a $400,000 donation toward the project was given by the family of Medina resident and longtime Mason Willard "Steve" Stephenson, who died in 2008 at age 99. To view the photos from the ceremony, please click on the photo above.

DrillMedina Township Police and Fire Departments along with Medina City, LST and Medina General Hospital participated in a Mock disaster drill on Thursday, April 19, 2012. About 8:30 a.m. these agencies responded to 4087 Medina Road to assist "victims" of a mock tornado that ripped through an AT&T utility building.

During the approximately two-hour exercise, four people simulated having various injuries, including chemical burns to the eyes and body, breathing problems and nausea, said Christina Fazio, director of the county's Emergency Management Agency. About 40 people participated in the exercise as victims, responders, evaluators and scenario designers.

By being proactive and preparing for disasters, we increase our awareness to events or situations that may occur in our community. The mock event helps us identify better ways of handling things in the future should such situations arise. To view photos from the drill, please click on the photo at left.

Drug Enforcement Administration on a Nationwide Drug Take Back Initiative. For the second year in a row, the Medina Township Police Dept. supported the DEA's Drug Take Back Event. We had an amazing turnout again, as in 2010, collecting garbage bags full of unwanted, expired prescription drugs. The Medina Twp. Police Department was used as drop-off location where many residents and senior citizen facilities can took advantage of disposing old or unwanted medications. We wanted to reach out to individuals and encourage them to rid their households of unused prescription drugs that pose a safety hazard and can contribute to prescription drug abuse.

SHOP WITH A COP - 2011

Medina Township Police Department's 2011 "Shop with a Cop" Program was a huge success again. We would like to thank all the generous people who purchased raffle tickets to buy the gift cards for a total of 23 children. After breakfast in Richfield, we transported the kids to the elementary school in Stow. Close to 100 cruisers and 311 kids caravanned with lights and sirens to Walmart and each child was able to spend up to $100 each on Christmas Gifts. After shopping, we went back to the school and had pizza, McDonalds, and other goodies. All the children expressed their gratitude and excitement throughout the day. The chaperones enjoyed themselves as well and it was a fantastic day for all.

As Chief, my sincere appreciation goes out to our Township Police Officers and Medina Township Fire Department for transporting and chaperoning the kids. A Special thanks to the Trustee Ray Jarrett and local residents who gave up their Saturday and volunteered to help chaperone the kids while they shopped. We could not have made this happen without all of you.
